    How to use the calculator

    1. Measure the length and width of the floor or wall.
    2. Enter the size of one tile and the grout joint you plan to use.
    3. Pick the layout. A diagonal layout wastes more tile, so the extra for waste rises to 15%.
    4. Enter how many tiles come in a box to see how many boxes to buy.

How the numbers are worked out

    Tiles

Tiles = area ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint)), plus waste, rounded up

    A 12 × 10 ft floor is 120 sq ft. A 12 in tile with a ⅛ in joint covers 12⅛ × 12⅛ in, so the floor takes 117.5 tiles. Adding 10% gives 130 tiles, or 13 boxes of 10.

    Thinset or tile adhesive

Bigger tiles need a deeper bed, so one bag covers less floor. The calculator uses these typical figures.

Longest side of the tileTrowel notchOne 50 lb bag coversOne 20 kg bag covers
    Under 8 in (200 mm)¼ × ¼ in (6 mm)95 sq ft7.5 m²
    8 to 15 in (200 to 380 mm)¼ × ⅜ in (10 mm)65 sq ft5 m²
    Over 15 in (380 mm)½ × ½ in (12 mm)45 sq ft3.5 m²

Coverage varies by product, so check the bag you buy.

    Grout

Grout volume = area × (tile length + tile width) ÷ (tile length × tile width) × joint width × tile thickness

Dry grout weighs about 1.7 kg per litre of joint it fills. For the 120 sq ft floor above, that comes to about 9 lb with 10% spare, so one 10 lb bag.

    Common questions

How many 12×12 tiles do I need for 120 square feet?

With a ⅛ inch grout joint, 120 square feet takes 118 tiles. Add 10% for cuts and breakages and buy 130.

How much extra tile should I buy?

10% for a straight or brick layout in a simple room. 15% for a diagonal layout or a room with many corners. Buy it all at once so the batch matches.

How do I work out square footage for tile?

Multiply the length by the width in feet. A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 120 square feet. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles and add them.

How much grout do I need?

It depends on tile size, joint width and tile thickness. 120 square feet of 12 inch tile with a ⅛ inch joint needs about 9 lb of dry grout. Small tiles or wide joints need far more.

How much thinset do I need?

For tiles 8 to 15 inches long, a 50 lb bag covers about 65 square feet. Tiles over 15 inches need a deeper bed, and a bag covers about 45 square feet.

    What the list leaves out

    • Backer board, membrane or levelling compound under the tile.
    • Trim, edging strips and thresholds.
    • Grout sealer.
    • Areas you will not tile, such as under a bath or fitted cabinets. Subtract them from your measurements.
